Causes of Alcoholism Introduction Alcoholism or alcohol dependence is one of the most prevalent problems found among teens and adults alike. But, what exactly is alcoholism? Alcoholism is a chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to [mental] and physical dependence or addiction (Merriam-Webster). However, it is still unclear to scientists as to what particularly forms this addiction. Yet, all research has led to three very distinct components that contribute in an individual’s chance of developing this disorder. The three factors associated with what causes alcoholism include a person s: environment, genetics, and mental state. How Does the Environment Contribute to Alcoholism? Our environment molds and shapes us into the people we have become. As a result, this can also determine whether they will become dependent on alcohol or not. A vast amount of experts claim that environmental factors can greatly influence how people view and think about alcohol. These factors vary from alcohol availability to advertising. For example, studies show that if you live in close proximity to bars or liquor stores than the social acceptance of drinking alcohol is significantly greater than in areas which are located further from these establishments.
